Even though I try to be a #fitgirl, I fail most of the time. I just like bad food too much. Sugar is my biggest addiction/temptation, but an other thing I really really like is fried stuff: kipcorns and kroketten in particular..
In this blog I’ll tell you all about kroketten or croquette (from the French croquer, “to crunch”).
Kroketten for Dummies
In Holland we are famour for our kroketten (and bitterballen: smaller round kroketten). For those of you who don’t know this delicious Dutch treat, a kroket is a meat-based snack, typically containing a mixture of beef or veal (minced or chopped), beef broth, butter, flour for thickening, parsley, salt and pepper, resulting in a thick roux.
The ingredients are combined and cooked, then refrigerated for the mixture to firm up. Once firm, the filling is rolled into sticks roughly 12 cm, then battered in a breadcrumb and egg mixture and finally deep-fried. Served with mosterd and in my case also mayonnaise. YUMM!
Broodjes kroket at Piet Patat
Friends of mine know that I love kroketten, especially as a late night snack. I used to visit Piet Patat at the Grote Markt on Friday and Saterday nights for years in a row. At a curtain point Abdel (yes, his name obviously wasn’t Piet) even knew what I was about to order: 3 broodjes kroket (for the price of 2). I always gave away the third
So, I have to admit; I was a kroket monster. Like I said, I try to be a fit girl now and late night snacks are no longer a part of my regular diet.. But sometimes I can’t resist the inner monster and I enjoy them anyway.
Het Kroket Loket
As you can imagine, I was over the moon when I heard that “Het Kroket Loket” was opening its doors. OMG!!
A STORE FILLED WITH ALL DIFFERENT SORTS OF KROKETTEN. Yes people, it’s true. Heaven (and hell for my inner fit girl) on earth.
The store at Papestraat 21 sells 10 kroketten with fillings such as pulled pork, cheese, shrimps and vegetables. I tried the shrimps, chorizo, pulled pork, truffle with mushrooms and Peking duck kroketten. They all have a think crust and the roux is full of flavors. I loved the pulled pork and the shrimp the most, that last one had a little bit of see weed in it… Oh shitttt, I’ll be back because I still need to try the other kroketten on the menu. So far, it’s delicious and the store looks nothing like a snackbar. It looks hip and I truly believe that it offers the city something new.
I wish the owners, all the best. And guys, please start something like Het Kroket Loket Buffet at food festivals, it will be a great addition!
